2.2.我 的 语言 探索 历程 ：远 赴 欧洲 （下 ）

===在 欧洲 搭便车 ===

我 确信 自己 在 那 几年 里 ，搭乘 便车 已 超过 好几万 哩 。 从 西班牙 到 瑞典 ，经由 德国 到 意大利 ，或 穿梭 在 各国 之间 等等 。 再 没有 更好 的 方法 可以 让 你 去 探究 历史 与 地理 ，去 认识 人 或 练习 语 言 。 不幸 的 是 ，如今 搭乘 便车 已 不 像 往日 那么 容易 了 。 我 时常 改变 住所 ，但 大部分 居住 在 「青年之家」 ， 那 是 认识 来自 世界 各国 旅客 最好 的 地方 。 我 也 常常 见到 这些 人 竖起 拇指 站 在 路旁 ， 巨型 的 帆布 背包 放在 阔叶 的 树木 旁边 ， 准备 搭乘 便 车到 下 一个 目的地 。

记得 有次 我 从 法国 的 阿尔卑斯山 要 到 地中海 去 。

途中 ，有个 晚上 我 在 「拿破仑 之 路 」(的 一处 山区 过夜 。)， ( 一八 一五 年 三月 ， 拿破仑 经 由此 路径 企图 推翻 当时 的 路易 十八 世 ) 的 一处 山区 过夜 。 ##当晚 寒风 刺 骨 ，我 冻得 整个 晚上 都 不能 入睡 。 第二天 ，为了 让 自己 暖和 些 ，我 就 躺 在 格拉斯 一处 长满 熏衣草 的 田野 间 ， 在 温暖 的 阳光 下 小睡 了 片刻 ，接着 才 抵达 海边 的 尼斯 。 我 曾 睡 在 公园 内 、 壕沟 里 、 海滩 上 、 还有 各式各样 的 旅舍 。（ 壕 ）

有 两次 ，一次 在 德国 的 波柏林根 ，一次 在 法国 的 丕皮南 ， 我 还 住 进 了 当地 的 监狱 里 ，度过 了 相当 舒适 的 夜晚 。 那 并 不是 因为 我 当时 犯 了 什么 罪 ，而是 那时 天色 已晚 ，又 下着 雨 ，值班 的 警察 也 似乎 乐意 有个 伴 。 我 是 当时 那 两处 机构 的 唯一 客人 ，住处 简单 但 相当 干净 。

我 最 喜欢 的 路线 ，就是 被 称为 米第 的 法国 南方 一带 。 那里 有 古意盎然 的 石砌 村庄 、干旱性 的 地中海 植物 、 古罗马 废墟 、及 许多 历史悠久 的 城市 ， 如 : 阿维农 ( 法国 东南部 的 重要 城市 ， 产 葡萄酒 ， 举办 年度 剧展 等 )、 尼米 (法国 南部 重要 农产品 交易中心 ，著名 的 古罗马 水道 桥 即 在 附近 )、 及 阿尔斯 (位于 隆河 旁 ，著名 画家 梵谷 曾 于 一八八八年 来此 居住 )； 还有 老人 们 在 多沙 的 城镇 广场 上 玩 一种 滚球 的 游戏 (是 法国 一种 户外 游戏 )。 这 一带 夏天 的 温度 颇 高 ，很 容易 就 超过 摄氏 四十 度 。

接着 ，我 就 进入 当时 还 在 法朗哥 统治 下 的 西班牙 ， 这是 一九六零 年代 早期 我 梦寐以求 的 假日 旅游胜地 。 西班牙语 的 词汇 及 语法 都 和 法语 相去不远 ，因为 都是 源自 拉丁语系 。 我 稍微 研究 、阅读 了 一些 西班牙文 ， 每天 和 一些 友善 健谈 的 西班牙人 交谈 ， 我 的 西班牙语 也 听 起来 差强人意 了 （人意） 。 我 第一次 去 巴塞罗纳 ，一 登上 一辆 挤满 人 的 市公车 ，我 就 被 当地人 的 热情 友善 包围 了 。 他们 帮 我 料理 背包 ，确定 我 知道 「青年 之 家 」在 什么 地方 ， 然后 还 邀请 我 到 当地 的 酒吧 饮酒 。 我们 从 一个 公共 大 酒壶 里 喝酒 ，那个 酒壶 有个 像 手臂 一样 长 的 管子 ， 酒 就 从 管子 喷 出来 ，灌 进 你 的 嘴里 。

现代 的 西班牙 ，经历 了 经济 的 奇迹 与 快速 的 建设 ， 其 面貌 与 一九六零 年代 我 刚 到访 的 时候 ，已 大不相同 。 我 初次 访问 的 西班牙 ，还 保有 一股 清新自然 的 韵味 ，如今 恐怕 再也 见不到 了 。 我 曾 在 七月 七日 那天 到 潘罗纳 参与 他们 的 「 奔牛节 」 盛会 。 连续 三天 ，整个 城镇 完全 沉浸 在 歌唱 、豪饮 、畅谈 的 欢乐气氛 里 。 我 可以 在 每个 小 酒吧 和 餐厅 里 练习 西班牙语 ，虽 是 饮酒 狂欢 ，整个 小镇 仍然 十分 安全 。 我 比较 喜欢 参加 热闹 的 聚会 ， 至于 必须 冒 着 生命危险 与 牛 狂奔 的 玩意 ， 则 敬而远之 了 。 更何况 ，这个 项目 还 要求 早上 起得 很早 。

由于 我 一向 对 历史 和 探险 故事 深感 兴趣 ，我 发现 西班牙 就 如同 法国 一样 ，其 人民 与 文化 融合 的 情形 十分 引人入胜 。 巴斯克 人 、 赛 尔特 人 、 伊比利亚人 、 希腊人 、 罗马 人 、 西 哥德人 、 阿拉伯 人 、 巴巴 里 人 ( 柏柏尔 人 ?)、 犹太人 、 吉普赛人 ( 源自 印度 ) 等 民族 的 历史 演变 及 语言 文化 ， 都 对 西班牙 产生 影响 。

现在 我们 往往 忘记 了 中古 欧洲 的 伟大 导师 ， 即是 西班牙 南部 安达卢斯 的 世界性 阿拉伯 文化 。 当 西班牙 北方 的 基督徒 再度 征服 南方 的 回教 地区 时 ， 从 欧洲各国 蜂涌 而来 的 学者 ，就 在 托里多 及 其它 城市 翻译 阿拉伯 的 科学 与 哲学 文献 。 阿拉伯人 从 沙漠 中 崛起 ，进而 征服 从 印度 到 西班牙 之间 的 土地 。 藉此 ， 他 们 接触 了 印度 、波斯 、巴比伦 、埃及 与 希腊 ，并 从中 学习 ，然后 吸收 成为 他们 文化 的 一部 份 。 他们 与 中国 的 唐朝 也 有 频繁 的 贸易 接触 ，对 中国 的 科技 亦 相当 了解 。 西方 的 科学 、数学 、医学 、音乐 、建筑 及其 它 研究 科目 ， 皆 因 接触 阿拉伯 的 高度 文明 而 有 巨大 的 成长 与 进步 。 当 我 参观 优雅 的 安达卢西亚 花园 和 建筑物 时 ，都 会 试着 去 想象 在 最 光辉灿烂 时期 的 安达卢斯 。

西班牙 ，尤其 是 在 南方 ，是个 能 让人 产生 强烈 感觉 与 印象 的 国家 。 极度 明亮 的 太阳 ， 使得 无论 在 光与影 之间 、 在 花 与 树 的 阴暗 色调 之间 、 或 在 粉白色 的 石屋 与 橘红色 的 干旱 土地 之间 ，都 造成 了 强烈 的 对比 效果 。 记得 那时 有人 告诉 我 :「就是 这 太阳 ，使 我们 能够 忍受 佛朗哥 的 统治 。」 我 所到之处 ， 人人 都 显得 很 自豪 、 很 友善 。 而 我 西班牙语 的 沟通 能力 ，也 已 使 我 能够 走进 任何 一家 小吃店 或 小 酒吧 ，透过 语言 去 结交 朋友 和 探索 、了解 当地 的 文化 。

===一九六零 年代 的 巴黎 ===

虽然 我 喜欢 旅游 ，但是 在 法国 的 主要 目的 还是 学习 。 一九六零 年代 初期 的 巴黎 ，是 个 十分 奇妙 的 地方 。 我 住 在 一个 没有 暖气 ，又 极 不 舒适 的 小 公寓 里 。 公寓 位于 Faubourg St. Honoré 街 上 一栋 建 于 一七八九 年 的 建筑物 里 ， 我 住 在 六楼 ，盥洗室 则 在 三楼 。 我 总是 知道 五楼 的 邻居 是否 在家 ， 因为 每次 我 在 厨房 里 用 小 澡盆 洗 热水澡 ，由于 不可能 不 泼洒 些 水 到 盆 外面 ， 当 楼下 的 邻居 发现 水滴 到 房内 的 时候 ，就 会 拿起 扫把 用力 敲打 天花板 。

像 这么 简陋 的 楼房 ，居然 位于 巴黎 最 时尚 的 精华 区 内 ，实在 令人 惊讶 。 一些 有名 的 服装 与 香水 公司 ，总部 就 在 这条 街上 。 譬如 : 雅诗兰黛 就 在 我 住 的 那栋 楼 里 ; 法国 总统 的 官邸 爱丽舍 宫 ， 则 在 街 的 另一头 ; 再 隔 条 街 ， 就是 「 协和 广场 」 了 。 至于 我 住 的 那个 没有 暖气 的 公寓 ，自从 法国 大革命 之后 则 没什么 改变 !

从 我 住处 步行 可及 的 范围 内 ，是 有钱人 光临 的 商店 和 餐厅 。 如 : 位于 玛德莲 广场 的 富香 ， 是 家 有名 的 高级 食品 专卖店 ; 还有 格兰 大道 上 的 许多 商品 店 和 美心 餐厅 等 。 这是 「美丽 纪元 (欧洲 于 第一次 世界大战 前 的 安定 富裕 时光 ，约 从 公元 1871到 1914年 。 )」 的 世界 啊 ! 对 我 而言 ， 那 正是 廿 世纪 欧洲 悲剧 ( 指 第一次世界大战 ) 发生 之前 ， 法国 文化 达到 了 最高点 的 象征 。

而 香榭丽舍 大道 就 在 街头 转角 。 我 时常 在 傍晚 漫步 于 这条 巴黎 最 引人入胜 的 大道 。

我 从 中古 世纪 的 圣母院 开始 ，走过 文艺复兴 时代 的 罗浮宫 ， 经过 大革命 之前 由 路易十四 的 园艺师 所 设计 的 杜乐丽 花园 ， 然后 穿过 「协和 广场 」--在 这里 ，十八 和 十九世纪 的 影响 很 协调 地 融合 在 一起 ;

再 继续 往前走 ，你 的 注意力 就 完全 被 拿破仑 历史性 的 凯旋门 所 吸引 。 它 位于 星形 广场 (现 称 戴高乐 广场 )，从 顶端 可以 俯瞰 巴黎 市区 。 虽然 拿破仑 建立 凯旋门 的 意图 是 在 显赫 他 的 战绩 ， 但是 要 维持 任何 文明 的 影响力 ，并不是 靠 武力 ，而是 靠 它 对 世界 文明 的 贡献 。

我 的 自行车 带着 我 四处 跑 :上学 、打工 、或 到 市中心 的 拉丁区 去 玩 。 骑 自行车 穿过 交通 繁忙 的 协和 广场 或 星形 广场 ，是 我 每天 都 得 面对 的 挑战 。 不过 ，从 另一方面 来看 ，也 没有 其它 更好 的 方法 可以 让 你 能 真正 体验 到 巴黎 的 生活 了 。 此外 ，这 也 是 从 某处 去到 某处 最 便捷 的 方 法 ，而且 不用 担心 停车 问题 。

在 法国 读书 的时候 ，我 有 好几个 兼差 。 其中 之一 ，是 到 一个 法国 家庭 去 与 他们 共进 午餐 ，以 英语 交谈 作为 回报 。 身为 一个 穷学生 ，我 通常 吃 的 是 学校 餐厅 里 的 简单 快餐 。 这个 兼差 倒是 能 让 我 趁机 大快朵颐 ，并且 喝些 葡萄酒 ， 最后 再来 一杯 蒸汽 加压 煮出 的 浓咖啡 ，好 让 我 保持 清醒 。

我 的 第二个 差事 ，是 负责 管理 一所 农学院 的 语言 实验室 。 每逢 星期四 ，我 在 一个 「中产 阶级 家庭 」饱食 一顿 丰盛 的 午餐 之后 ， 便 骑 着 自行车 ，绕过 半个 巴黎 来到 这所 农学院 。 我 满头大汗 地 赶到 语言 实验室 ，及时 开启 控制中心 的 设备 。

就是 在 这 所 农学院 里 ，有个 学生 因为 不 满意 自己 的 英语 理解 能力 ，忿 而 离开 了 实验 教室 。 我 记得 那些 教材 都 是 一些 技术性 的 农业 专有名词 ， 对 年轻 的 学生 来说 ，实在 是 枯燥无味 。 如果 只是 期望 日后 可以 使用 而 没有 应有 的 兴趣 ， 你 是 无法 真正 学好 单词 的 。

这些 来自 农场 的 学生 并 不会 讲 英语 ， 为什么 要 让 他们 学 些 艰涩 难懂 的 、 以后 很 可能 根本 就 派 不上 用场 的 技术性 专门 用语 呢 ？

这 情形 在 一般 的 语言 教学 十分 普遍 ，都 是 过于 强调 语法 和 词汇 。 对 学生 来说 ，这 只是 用来 通过 考试 ，不是 用来 沟通 。

只有 那些 有趣 、有意义 的 东西 ，才能 真正 让 我们 学 有所得 。 我们 应该 允许 学生 选择 自己 熟悉 、 感兴趣 的 题材 。（ 悉 ， 悉知 ）

有些 人 可能 选择 农场 经营 ，但 也 有些 人 可能 宁愿 听 些 实际 的 英语 会话 录音 ， 像是 年轻人 之间 讨论 音乐 或 参加 宴会 之类 的 话题 。 我们 的 目的 是 要 使 英语 具有 意义 。 一旦 这 些 学生 能够 用 英语 沟通 ，农业 技术性 的 专门 词汇 就 能 很快 地 学会 。

===我 的 第一份 全职 工作 ===

有天 凌晨 ，我 在 巴黎 的 中央 市场 (就是 出现 在 电影 Irma La Douce 的 那个 市场 )， 喝 了 一碗 当作 宵夜 的 洋葱 浓汤 之后 ，骑着 自行车 回到 住所 。 信箱 里 有 一封信 ，告诉 我 已 被 加拿大 外贸部 录用 。 这是 好几个 月 前 ，我 的 一个 朋友 说服 我 去 加拿大 大使馆 参加 外交 工作人员 录用 考试 。 现在 ，我 真的 有 了 一份 工作 !

这位 朋友 和 我 ，曾经 计划 只要 本田 公司 肯 赞助 ，我们 就 开着 本田 摩托车 环游 世界 。 现在 ，这 份 外交 工作 似乎 比 这个 计划 显得 更 有 希望 。 虽然 我 在 法国 过得 十分 愉快 ，我 还是 很 想念 加拿大 。 出国 可以 让 我 更 了解 、更 懂得 欣赏 自己 的 乡土 和 文化 。 学习 另 一种 语言 文化 并 不会 让 你 因此 失去 对 自己 出身 背景 的 兴趣 ，相反 的 ，只会 更 强化 才 是 。

但是 ， 我 还是 命中注定 要 到 亚洲 去 再 多 待 几年 ， ( 命中 注定 ) 最后 才能 在 温哥华 定居 下来 。
