每个 新 语言 都 是 自然 的 奇迹 ，我们 都 能够 自己 去 探索 、去 认知 。 老师 的 功能 只是 激发 、鼓励 及 引导 ， 只有 学习者 能够 决定 要 不要 去 探索 那个 语言 ， 然后 用 自己 的 方式 去 慢慢 吸收 。 你 应 该 有 信心 自己 能够 很 自然 地 去 做 这件事 。 当 弥尔敦 认为 他 的 北方 同乡 天生 就 无法 学习 南方 语 言 的 时候 ， 他 显然 是 错 了 。 把 语言 学习 当成 是 一项 非凡 的 任务 ， 可以 看成 是 自我实现 的 愿景 ，但 同时 也 妨碍 你 发挥 潜能 。 假如 你 不 相信 自己 能 讲 另 一种 语言 ，学 起来 当然 就 不会 成功 。 要 相信 自己 生来 就 有 能力 可以 说 任何 语言 ， 有 能力 可以 成为 语言 家 。 你 只是 要 在 长大 之后 找出 一个 方法 ，把 这个 能力 培养 出来 。

也许 某些 人 比起 另 一些 人 有 更好 的 语言 学习 能力 ， 但 这种 天生 的 学习 能力 并 不是 成功 的 决定 因素 。 为什么 许多 荷兰 或 瑞典 人 善于 学习 语言 ， 而 德国 及 英国人 就 略逊一筹 ？( 略逊 一筹 ) 更 别说 是 美国 人 了 。 为什么 讲 法语 的 加拿大人 一般 比 法国 来 的 法国人 ， 学 起 英语 会 更 有 成果 ？ 为什么 新加坡 华人 的 英语 就 比 中国 、甚至 香港 人的 英语 通常 要 来得 好 呢 ？

我 不 相信 某些 国籍 会 比 另一些 国籍 的人 ， 天生 具有 较 好 的 语言 学习 能力 。 比较 可能 的 理由 是 态度 上的 差异 。 外语 学得 好 的 人 ，通常 认为 有 必要 用 另 一种 语言 去 沟通 ， 因此 不会 觉得 不 寻常 ，甚至 视为 理所当然 。 许多 荷兰 或 瑞典人 知道 自己 必须 去 学习 外国 语言 ， 因为 较 少 有 外国 人 会 选择 学习 荷兰语 或 瑞典语 。 同样 的 ，许多 新加坡人 和 魁北克人 知道 他们 需要 英语 ， 所以 就 不会 抗拒 。 他们 都 很 自然 地 认为 自己 终究 会 讲 一口 流利 的 英语 。

===语言 教学 的 局限 ===

我们 必须 去 发现 语言 。 没有 意愿 的 学习者 是 教 不 来 的 。 是否 能够 成为 语言 家 ，完全 决定 于 你 自己 ， 不是 学校 ，也 不是 老师 。 语言 老师 可以 帮助 你 进步 ，却 不能 让 你 讲 得 流畅 ， 你 必须 自 己 去 学来 。 老师 可以 激发 、说明 、或是 提供 给 你 最好 的 资源 ， 之后 ，你 就 要 自行 负责 ， 根据 你 自己 的 个性 与 兴趣 去 追求 自己 的 学习 历程 。 这么 做 ，你 就 能 很 自然 地 、没有 压力 地 把 语言 学好 。

不幸 的 是 ，语言 教室 通常 只是 一个 人造 的 环境 ， 只 强调 一套 根据 课程 时间表 所 制定 的 语言 教学 。 你 能 期待 的 是 : 老师 会 把 语言 的 知识 和 技巧 按部就班 地 传授 给 学生 。 只要 教科书 能 按时 完成 学习 任务 ，考试成绩 也 表现 不错 ， 学生 就 被 认为 是 学会 了 该 语言 。 结果 是 ，学生 用 外语 沟通 的 流利 程度 大多 令人 失望 。

语言 教室 也 会 让 人 有 压迫感 。 学生 通常 不 喜欢 老师 在 他人 面前 改正 自己 的 错误 ， 而且 会 常常 为 自己 无法 贴切 表达 而 沮丧 不已 。 老师 通常 期待 学生 要 表现 无误 ，而 不 只是 真正 的 沟通 。 此 外 ，学生 也 常常 为 其它 同学 的 表现 感到 威胁 或 懊恼 ， 这 要 看 同学们 学习 新 语言 的 熟练度 是 比 自己 多 或 少 了 。

那些 最 有效 的 语言 课堂 ，学生 学习 的 主要 目的 不是 语言 本身 ， 而是 学生 感兴趣 的 题材 。 在 学习 有趣 的 题材 时 ，学生 开始 慢慢 吸收 这个 语言 ， 也 比较 不会 意识 到 语言 的 困难 ，这样 才能 保持 交流 的 热忱 。 学生 经由 听 和 读 而 大量 接触 了 感兴趣 的 题材 之后 ， 便 能 逐渐 体会出 正确 的 语法 结构 和 应该 使用 的 字句 。 这时 ，他们 就 有 意愿 要 更进一步 去 了解 语言 的 每一部分 。

语言 教学 最好 做到 让 学生 在 需要 的时候 ，自行 提问 ， 而 不是 只 对 老师 的 课程表 做 呆板 的 反应 。 老师 应该 私下 更正 学生 的 错误 ， 或是 写下 具体 的 内容 说明 该 如何 贴切 使用 语法 。 假如 教室 能 很 灵活 地 使用 ， 并且 让 学生 (而不是 老师 )主导 学习 的 过程 ， 教室 会 是 很 有用 的 学习 环境 。

老师 (而 不是 学生 )控制 传统 语言 教学 的 另 一个 方面 ， 即 透过 频繁 的 测验 去 检验 学生 的 学习 效果 。 为了 许多 不同 的 原因 ， 教育 当局 认为 有 必要 去 客观 地 评估 非 母语 者 的 语言 能力 。 比如 英语 ，就 有 TOEFL 或 TOEIC 等 的 测验 。

有 太多 学生 把 精神 集中 在 准备 这些 测验 ， 而 不是 学习 如何 从容 地 与 人 沟通 。 为了 准备 测验 ，尤其 是 重要 的 英语 水平 考试 ， 学生 往往 只 去 学习 那些 由 内容 分离 出来 、彼此 没有 关联 的 字词 表 。 他们 会 花费 不计其数 的 时间 去 复习 语法 规则 、动词 表 、词组 、还有 题库 等等 。 为了 得到 高分 ，他们 就要 学习 各种 特殊 技巧 去 应付 这些 考试 。 这样 的 学习 方式 ，不但 效果 不好 ，而且 还 会 增加 学习 的 压力 。 从 长远 看 ，过度 强调 在 TOEFL 或 TOEIC 中 获得 高分 ， 往往 会 让 你 偏离 了 想要 讲得 流利 的 真正 目标 。 这些 考试 只是 你 去 的 学术 或 专业 成功 的 短期 目标 ， 假如 你 专注 在 通过 这样 的 考试 而 没有 真正 去 学习 语言 的 内涵 ， 你 只是 自欺欺人 ，到 终了 也 还是 不能 有效地 使用 这个 语言 。

学习 无 捷径 可 走 。 为了 能够 在 TOEFL 或 TEOIC 自如 地 回答 多数 的 问题 ， 你 须要 从 许多 不同 的 文章 中 去 熟悉 该 语言 的 自然 流动 。 这 可以 由 广泛 阅读 或 聆听 感兴趣 的 题材 中 获得 ， 也 可以 同时 使用 一套 能 帮助 你 记忆 生字 ， 尤其 是 常用 词组 的 学习 课程 。 像 这种 联系 上下文 来 学习 新 语言 ， 而 不是 靠着 学习 语法 或 单词表 ， 才 是 最快 、 也 很 开心 的 的 学习 方法 。

有些 国家 ，尤其 是 东亚 ，想 进入 名校 或 大学 的 竞争 十分 激烈 。 由于 外语 是 很 重要 的 科目 ， 因 此 学生 必须 承受 很大 的 学习 压力 去 参加 外语 学习 课程 ， 以期 在 全国性 的 考试 中 获得 高分 。 有 许多 学校 ，每 班 挤满 了 五十 到 七十 个 学生 ， 那 是 无法 学习 如何 交流 的 。 老师 们 使出 浑身解数 教导 学生 如何 在 考试 中 获取 高分 的 秘诀 。 我 十分 了解 这样 的 教法 会 使 学生 在 学习 新 语言 的 时候 失去 兴趣 。 许多 地方 的 公立学校 系统 ， 在 第二 语言 教学 上 大多 是 不 成功 的 ， 这 对 语言 学习者 当然 有 负面 的 影响 。 许多 有 潜力 成为 语言 家 的 人 ， 都 被 训练 成 把 语言 视为 一项 学校 必 教 的 乏味 科目 。

以 我 为 例 ， 我 觉得 单纯 学习 语法 理论 不太 有趣 ，而且 效果 不好 。 我 排斥 做 语法 练习 ，或 回答 那些 想 测试 我 语法 知识 的 各种 问题 。 高中 毕业 之后 ，我 发现 ，经由 有 系统地 去 接触 语言 ， 要 比 依赖 正规 的 课堂 教学 ，学 起来 要 快 得多 。 有些 句子 的 结构 在 一 开始 时 显得 奇怪 、难懂 ， 但 经过 不断 的 阅读 和 聆听 ，最后 就 习惯 成 自然 了 。

偶尔 ，我 会 参考 语法 书 去 解答 学习 时 所 碰到 的 问题 。 有时 ，那些 说明 有用 ，有时 却 又 未必 。 而且 那些 语法 规则 或 说明 ，往往 只 记住 一会儿 ，过 不久 便 忘 了 。 最后 ，还是 不断 去 应用 这个 语言 ，才 改进 了 我 的 语法 。

离开 教室 ，我 愿意 花 更 多 的 精力 去 聆听 、阅读 自己 感兴趣 的 题材 。 这是 探索 语言 最 自然 、 也 最 有趣 的 方法 。 我 逐渐 总结 出 各种 方法 ，不断 增加 我 的 词汇量 ， 使得 我 不会 因为 几天 不用 就 马上 忘记 了 。 我 知道 要 想 成功 必须 靠 我 个人 的 努力 ， 因此 我 总是 积极主动 地 搜寻 新 的 学习 内 容 ， 而 不是 只 依赖 课堂 上 所 提供 的 材料 。

无容置疑 的 ，仍 有 许多 学习者 会 觉得 ， 置身于 经过 特别 设计 的 传统 教学 环境 中 学习 ，是 最 快乐 的 ; 或 认为 学习 语法 和 准备 考试 ，也 不是 那么 令人讨厌 。 这 一类 的 学习者 依然 可以 将 他们 的 学习 习惯 变得 更加 自我 主导型 ， 从而 得到 更好 的 学习 效果 。 他们 可以 按照 自己 的 需要 和 兴趣 去 设计 学习 过程 ， 如此 ，不但 可以 强化 原有 的 课堂 语言 学习 经验 ， 并且 能 在 结束 正规 的 课程 之后 ，仍能 继续 不断 地 求 进步 。

===自然 学习 ===

讲 一种 新 语言 是 天生 自然 的 事 ， 你 只要 把 自己 已经 拥有 、但 需要 加点 适当 刺激 的 潜在 能力 发挥 出来 。 语言 家 所用 的 方法 ，能 让 你 自由 追求 自己 的 兴趣 与 需要 ， 而 不用 依照 外在 强制 的 课程 去 学习 。 你 把 内在 已有 的 技能 发展 出来 ，与 目标 语言 融成 一体 ， 注意 倾听 并 模仿 ，而 不是 透过 理论 去 学习 。

人 在 达到 孩童 游戏 时 的 认真 境界 时 ，才 最 像 自己 。 --赫拉克里塔斯

孩童 使用 这些 自然 的方法 去 学习 语言 。 他们 仅只 想要 表达 ，他们 不会 阅读 语法 ，不 做 练习 ，不 准备 考试 ， 只是 很 自然 地 想要 学习 。 刚出生 时 ，所有 不同 国籍 的小孩 都 具有 同样 的 天赋 去 学习 一种 新 语言 。 不错 ，小孩 通常 先 学 母亲 的 语言 ， 但 他们 也 同时 具有 一种 共同 的 语言 天性 ， 可以 使 他们 学会 任何 语言 。
