2.3.我 的 语言 探索 历程 ：发现 亚洲 文化 （上 ）

在 我 开始 成为 外交人员 的 时候 ，并不知道 自己 会 因此 陷到 中国 和 日本 的 文化 里 。 我 的 语言 探险 很快 就要 让 我 面对 学习 语言 的 真正 挑战 。 这 两种 语言 对 我 来说 ，曾经 是 那么 陌生 与 遥远 。 想 把 这 两种 语言 学好 ，必须 要 下定决心 、下工夫 、并且 要 有 极好 的 学习 技巧 。 但是 ，若 不是 对 这些 人 、对 这些 文化 有 强烈 的 兴趣 ，也 还是 很 难 把 语言 学 得 通顺 。

在 一九六七 年 的 加拿大 首都 渥太华 ，我 开始 了 有生以来 的 第一份 全职 工作 ，职位 是 「商务 专员 」。 大部分 正在 受训 的 年轻 专员 ，都 希望 能 被 派 到 自己 感兴趣 的 国家 去 服务 。 但是 ，有 三分之一 的 相关 职位 是在 美国 。 每个 人 都 尽量 避免 被 分派 到 克里夫兰 或 布法罗 去 。

当 外贸局 宣布 要 指派 一人 前往 香港 学习 中文 ，以 预备 日后 与 中华人民共和国 建交 ， 我 心想 ，这是 避免 到 布法罗 的 最好 机会 了 。

于是 ，我 开始 向 渥太华 的 一名 中国 老先生 学习 中文 。 由于 一 星期 只 上 一 课 ，所以 学到 的 并不 多 。

我 只是 让 人事 主任 和 其它 资深 人士 知道 我 正在 做些 什么 ， 因为 就 机会 来说 ，为什么 他们 不 挑选 一名 已经 致力 学习 中文 的 学生 去 呢 ? 香港 并 不是 我 就职 的 第一个 选择 ： 我 其实 更 想 去 的 是 里约热内卢 、罗马 或 马德里 ， 不过 ，香港 听 起来 也 颇具 异国情调 。

我 很 高兴 自己 终于 被 指派 到 香港 去 。 这么 容易 地 被 选 上 ，是 因为 我 已 下决心 去 学习 这个 语言 的 缘故 。 决心 常常 以 不同 的 方式 付 红利 给 你 。 至于 为什么 要 选择 香港 ， 那 是 因为 中国 当时 正 处于 文化大革命 的 动荡 时刻 ， 而 台湾 又 因为 政治 因素 的 考虑 ， 对 一名 日后 即将 前往 中国 就任 的 加拿大 外交 代表 ，显然 并不 适宜 。 由于 香港 有 一些 讲 普通话 的 北方 移民 ，这时 便 成 了 学习 中文 最 适宜 的 地方 了 。 记得 那时 有 位 好 朋友 问 我 是否 应该 接受 那个 职务 。 「要是 你 学 不会 中文 怎么办 ?」他 问 。 由于 我 已经 有 学会 法语 的 经验 ，想当然 中文 也 应该 学得会 才 是 。 语言 家 能够 精通 数种 语言 ，大多 是 因为 与 日俱增 的 信心 。 语言 学习 已 不是 什么 神奇 的 事 。 而且 ，你 学习 的 语言 愈 多 ，就 愈 能够 培养出 用 新 方式 去 表达 的 能力 。 这 有点 像 运动 一样 ：一旦 学会 了 一种 ，就 很 容易 再 学习 另 一种 。

我 那位 好心 的 中文 老师 在 渥太华 时 曾 警告 过 我 ： “要 我 对 那些 迷人 的 香港 女孩 要 特别 小心 ！” 我 当时 并 没有 留意 他 的 忠言 。 结果 ，我 真的 在 香港 遇到 我 后来 的 妻子 卡门 。 我们 结婚 至今 已 三十多年 ，一直 都 很 快乐 ，而且 有 两个 儿子 和 五个 孙子 。 不过 ，这 在 我 当初 启程 到 神秘 的 远东 之 时 ，可 一点 也 不知道 。

===密集 学习 ，香港 1968 ===

我 想象 中 的 香港 是 :弯曲 的 中式 屋顶 ，低垂 的 杨柳树 ，是 个 具有 浪漫 色彩 的 城市 。 我 盼望 着 尽快 进入 这个 神秘 的 地方 。 那 是 一九六八年 的 六月 ， 我 年 方 二十二 岁 （ 廿二 ）， 首度 向 亚洲 出发 。

我 趁机 一路 游览 ，亲临 那些 以往 只能 在 想象 中 出现 的 世界 角落 :

在 意大利 ，我 见到 了 宏伟 的 罗马 和 它 毫无 秩序 的 交通 ;

在 以色列 ，夏 夜里 永恒 星空 下 的 古城 耶路撒冷 ，及其 战争 刚 结束 时 的 紧张 气氛 ;

在 伊朗 ， 德黑兰 的 传统 市集 真是 多采多姿 ， 而 横冲直撞 的 出租车 在 六月 天 仍 点缀 着 圣诞 彩灯 ;

在 印度 ，泰姬 玛哈陵 的 壮丽 和 新德里 的 混乱 不安 ;

在 泰国 ，色彩 明亮 的 曼谷 及其 优雅 的 人民 和 文化 。

我 对 这份 新 职务 的 兴奋 之情 ，随着 旅程 与 日俱增 。

终于 ，我 抵达 了 香港 ，坐上 了 前来 迎接 的 加拿大 大使馆 公务车 。 当 我们 驶过 拥挤 的 九龙 ，见到 许多 单调 、灰色 的 公寓 大厦 ，我 这才 突然 回到 了 现实 。 香港 并 不是 什么 世外桃源 啊 ! 总之 ，我们 的 车子 上 了 一艘 渡轮 ，要 从 九龙 到 香港岛 去 。

我 这时 突然 发现 自己 正面 对 一个 水上 万花筒 :

货轮 、驳船 、军舰 、还有 中式 舢板 和 许多 小 游艇 ， 远处 则 是 许多 现代化 的 摩天大楼 和 威严 壮观 的 旧 英国式 建筑 ， 这 一切 ，都 以 高耸 的 香港岛 的 太平山 作为 背景 。

生活 在 皇家 香港 领地 （这是 当时 的 称呼 ）， 我 总 觉得 有 种 被 关闭 的 感觉 。 如果 要 离开 香港 ，无论 去 哪里 ，都 得 搭乘 飞机 或 船 ， 当时 的 中国 也 不 太 容易 随时 造访 ，生活 在 香港 ，不免 感到 有些 郁闷 。 但是 ，我 有 个 最 经济 的方法 可以 让 自己 高兴 起来 ， 那 就是 付 上 港币 十 或 十五分 钱 ，然后 登上 天星小轮 ，跨海 到 另一岸 去 。 在 十五分钟 的 航程 中 ， 我 可以 不厌其烦 地 仔细观察 那些 远 在 天际 ， 或 近 在 水面 上 的 往来 船只 。

我刚 到 香港 的 最初 几个 月 ， 是 住 在 靠近 赤柱 ( 赤 , 柱 ) 和 浅水湾 ( 浅水 , 湾 ) 一带 的 地区 。 我 的 住所 正面 对 一个 富有 诗意 的小 水湾 ，视野 极佳 ， 可以 让 我 尽情 地 观察 那些 中式 小 舢舨 穿梭 在 闪烁 不定 、美丽 如 玉 的 南中国海 面上 。 这 也 颇 满足 了 我 追求 异国情调 的 热望 。 这 一带 ，比起 香港 其它 地区 ，人口 要 少 得 多 。 这里 有 海滩 、茂密 的 亚热带 植物 、还有 不少 的 欧洲 人口 ，像 极了 一个 渡假 胜地 。 我 被 安排 住 在 那里 ，然后 像 以往 一般 前来 学习 语言 的 外交人员 一样 ，到 香港大学 去 上课 。 但是 ，几个 月 之后 ，我 选择 住 到 人口 比较 密集 的 九龙 地区 ， 然后 到 香港中文大学 去 学习 中文 。 就 如同 当初 我 投入 到 法国 文化 里 去 学习 法文 一样 ， 我 选择 了 同样 的 方式 去 学习 中文 。

香港 的 主要 语言 是 广东话 ，因此 不能 提供 我 一个 真正 学习 普通话 的 环境 。 但 广东话 也 是 一种 中国 语言 ，而且 可以 让 我 充分 感受 到 中国 的 文化 。 我 走出 了 一向 轻松 写意 的 西方 小 环境 ，把 自己 完全 投入 到 中式 的 日常生活 里 : 来自 熙攘 的 街道 和 市场 的 各种 声音 和 气味 ; 贩卖 中国 药材 和 各种 稀奇古怪 物品 的 店铺 ; 街道 两旁 的 小 工作坊 里 ，人们 喧闹 而 精力充沛 地 做活 ; 还有 用 竿子 挑着 货品 沿街 叫卖 的 小贩 也 个个 活力 十足 。 在 学校 附近 ，或是 拥挤 的 九龙 尖沙咀 ， 我 可以 和 工人 们 一同 吃 些 便宜 的 面食 或 咖哩 饭 当 午餐 ， 也 可以 到 豪华 的 餐厅 去 享受 一顿 昂贵 的 广东 佳肴 。 林立 的 餐馆 呈现 不同 地区 的 中国 美味 : 北京 、山东 、四川 、潮州 ，各式各样 ，都 挤 在 狭窄 、熙攘 的 街道 里 。 这 就是 我 每天 学习 中文 的 环境 。 也 可以 说 ，我 是 间接地 、不知不觉地 被迫 接受 这个 语言 了 。

我 还 记得 在 午餐 时 与 老师 们 一面 吃着 回锅肉 、啃着 馒头 、喝着 鳗鱼汤 ， 一面 用 普通话 交谈 的 情形 。 这种 非正式 的 聚会 ，可说 是 我 最 轻松愉快 的 学习 经验 了 。 老师 们 会谈 些 他们 在 中国 时 的 童年 往事 ， 或 其它 一些 有趣 的 话题 。 吃 中国 菜 的 时候 ，每个 人 都 各自 用 筷子 在 公共 的 菜盘 里 挟 菜 。 由于 我 一向 胃口 很 好 ，又 是 桌 旁 唯一 的 加拿大人 ， 因此 很快 便 得 了 个 「挟 拿 大 」的 昵称 (重音 要 放 在 后面 两个 字 )。

我 选择 到 「香港中文大学 」是 个 正确 的 决定 。 这所 中文 学校 是 由 刘明 先生 所 主导 的 ，他 是 我 遇 过 的 最 有效率 的 语言 教师 之一 。 他 欢迎 大家 前去 学习 中文 ，并且 让 外国人 觉得 自己 能够 学会 这个 语言 。 他 坚持 学生 必须 认真 学习 ，因为 他 自己 本身 就是 个 精力充沛 、做事 认真 的人 。 他 鼓励 我 全心全力 接受 新 语言 的 挑战 ，也 尽量 配合 我 的 种种 需求 。 学校 里 的 其它 职员 ，也 都 十分 和气 、能够 鼓励 人 学习 。

一 开始 的 时候 ，我 是 靠着 与 老师 一对一 的 方式 学习 。 但 很快 的 ，我 就 发现 这样 的 上课 方式 十分 紧张 。 我 每天 早晨 要 上 三个 钟头 的 课 ，有时 会 觉得 疲累 而 不能 集中 精神 。 老师 们 的 教学 效果 也 因人而异 ， 有些 老师 只 想 用 英语 向 我 说明 中文 的 用法 ，那种 方式 实在 令人 讨厌 。 当时 流行 的 教法 是 强调 反复 练习 ，但 往往 也 让 人 又 烦 又 累 。 而 最 有效果 的 上课 时间 ，就是 老师 只 谈 些 引人 兴趣 的话题 。 我 大部分 的 学习 成就 ，是 那些 在 课堂 上 不拘形式 的 对谈 ，还有 我 自己 在 家里 的 密集 学习 。

就是 刘明 先生 这种 不停 懈 的 督导 和 挑战 ，激励 我 不断 认真 努力 地 学习 。 我们 采用 的 教材 ，是 由 「耶鲁 在 中国 」的 教学计划 所 提供 。 教材 的 第一册 是 「汉语 会话 」，背景 是 设在 解放前 的 中国 ， 会话 内容 则 是 描述 一位 史密斯 先生 如何 从 上海 到 南京 ， 然后 再 到 北平 (那 是 国民党 时期 的 称呼 )。 生活 、工作 、并且 在 中国 境内 四处 旅行 的 经过 。 这本 教材 的 内容 和 一九六零 年代 后期 的 中国 实际 状况 ，差距 很 大 。 那时 的 中国 正 陷于 文化大革命 的 风暴 里 ，并不 像 书 中 所 描绘 的 那样 。 我 已 不 太 记得 书中 的 内容 ， 但 我 了解 像 这 一类 并不 真实 的 教科书 ，也许 对 语言 的 初学者 仍 有 必要 。

===阅读 和 词汇 的 增长 ===

我们 的 第二 册 教材 ，内容 就 有趣 得 多 了 ，我 仍然 觉得 它 值得 推荐 。 它 的 书名 是 「中国 文化 廿 （二十 ）讲 」， 是 于 一九六三 年 由 耶鲁大学 编纂 的 初学 读本 ， 内容 涵盖 中国 的 历史 文化 ，并 使用 浅显易懂 的 语言 表达 。 我 至今 仍 偶尔 拿 出来 阅读 ，以 重新 唤起 我 对 中文 的 记忆 。 虽然 这 本书 使用 的 文字 非常 浅显 ，谈到 的 主题 却 非常 真实 ，都是 有关 中国 的 历史 和 文化 。

对 初学者 来说 ，把 阅读 材料 分 等级 是 不可避免 的 ， 因为 阅读 浅显 的 东西 能够 帮助 建立 信心 ， 然后 才 逐渐 加强 流利 的 程度 。 虽然 如此 ，这些 读本 应该 针对 大家 感兴趣 的 题材 ，而 不要 只是 模仿 儿童 故事 。 理想 上 ，应该 有 许多 题材 供 学习者 选择 ，但 也 应该 尽快 进入 真实 的 内容 。

大概 有 四个 月 的 时间 ，我 都 只 阅读 中文 的 规范 读物 。 这些 读物 ，大多 列 有 特别 预备 的 字 词表 ，而 题材 也 相当 广泛 ，从 历史 、政治 到 文学 都有 。

突然 间 ，一个 奇妙 的 世界 以 它 原本 的 语言 在 我 眼前 展开 : 先是 从 书本 ，然后 ，随着 我 程度 的 进展 ，也 开始 透过 实际 接触 的 人物 向 我 展现 。

我 全心全力 学习 中文 。 在 我 学习 法文 的 时候 ，我 其实 已有 十年 的 学校 训练 ，但 学习 中文 时 就 没有 这个 好处 。 尽管如此 ，我 还是 决定 尽可能 在 短期内 就要 学出 成绩 来 。 我 开始 主导 自己 的 学习 。

每天 一 醒过来 ，我 就 打开 录音机 ，无论 是 作为 背景 或 特别 训练 ，我 都 注意 收听 发音 。 我 认真 学习 中国 字 ，每天 都 练习 书写 并 复习 。 我 不断 阅读 ，对 那些 定义 不是 很 清楚 的 字词 ，就 特别 去 研究 它 的 上下文 。 往往 ，我 以为 自己 好象 永远 也 记不得 那些 生字 ，但 最后 总能 牢记 下来 。

香港 并 不是 个 讲 普通话 的 城市 ，所以 我 学 中文 的时候 总 觉得 相当 孤立 。 我 不太可能 一 走出 门 就 可以 找个 店主 或 其它 人 讲 普通话 。 虽然 电台 和 电视机 。。。虽然 电台 和 电视台 有 普通话 的 节目 ， 但 我 只能 模糊 听懂 一 小部份 ，其余 很快 就 消失 了 。 从 另一方面 来说 ，我 发现 使用 录音机 ， 可以 让 我 一再 反复 收听 那些 我 业已 了解 的 内容 ，这 对 我 帮助 极大 。 问题 是 ，要 找到 在 我 理解 程度 之内 的 有趣 录音带 ，也 是 有些 困难 。

当 我 住 在 香港 的 时候 ，录音机 还 不能 随身 携带 ， 是 那种 庞大 、笨重 、而且 难看 的 转盘式 录音机 ， 我 必须 在 家里 坐着 收听 。 如今 ，现代科技 不但 可以 让 你 很 容易 就 找到 有趣 的 材料 ， 而且 可以 下载 或 录下 音 来 ，然后 随时随地 收听 。

由于 中文 实际上 并 不是 以 语音 为主 的 字母 所 构成 ， 我 必须 学习 三 到 四 千 个 字 ，每个 字 都 须要 多达 十五 个 笔划 ，或者 更 多 。 至于 对 字词 的 吸收 或 理解 ，不用说 是 比 英文 难 多 了 。 我 一向 认为 字典 是 学习 语言 的 最后 领域 。 从 一本 传统 的 字典 中 找出 需要 的 字词 ， 不但 没有 效率 ， 而且 浪费时间 。 往往 一旦 合 上 了 字典 （ 合 上 ， 合 上书 ） ， 你 也 忘 了 那个 字 的 意思 。 使用 中文 字典 更是 比 使用 那些 用 字母 排列 的 字典 要 困难 得 多 。

学习 语言 最 让人 感到 挫折 的 ，就是 很 容易 忘记 刚 学 过 的 新 字 ， 好象 你 总是 要 一学 再 学 。 这 情形 在 学习 中文 的 时候 更 严重 ，因为 汉字 本身 就 比较 困难 ， 所以 我 一定 要 找出 一个 方法 来 增快 我 学习 汉字 的 速度 。 我 逐渐 发展 出 一套 学习 生字 的方法 ，好 加快 学习 速度 ，并且 能 把 学过 的 字 记下来 。 有个 系统 是 根据 一般 中国 小孩 学习 汉字 的 方法 。 我 买 了 些 划 有 格子 的 练习簿 ，先 在 第一 行 把 第一个 字 写 个 六 、七 遍 ， 然后 在 第三 行 写 上 发音 或 英文 说明 ， 接着 再 用 同样 的 方法 练习 第二个 字 。 很快 的 ，我 就 会 碰到 刚学过 的 第一 个 字 ，我 就 再 重写 一遍 。 也就是说 ，在 我 忘掉 一个 字 之前 ，我 通常 有 重新 复习 的 机会 。 刚 开始 的 时候 ，我 一天 只能 学 十个 生字 ， 没多久 ，就 进步 到 每天 能 达到 三十个 字 ，而且 能 记下 大约 50% 的 程度 。 假如 练习 的 生字 与 我 正在 阅读 或 聆听 的 课文 有关 ，记住 的 比率 就 更 高 。 这种 有 系统 的 、 一再 反复 学习 直到 记牢 为止 的 方法 ， 从此 就 成 了 我 以后 学习 语言 的 基本 法则 。

虽然 我 的 书法 还 不是 很 好 ，中文 写作 却 对 我 很 重要 。 写作 的 时候 ，我 比较 有 时间 去 造句 ，并且 小心 选择 要 用 的 字 。 写作 不但 帮助 我 加强 对 词汇 的 理解 ，也 可以 让 我 有 机会 练习 句子 的 构造 。

现代 的 中文 ， 书面语言 与 一般 的 口语 已 十分相似 ， 我 的 写作 风格 也 是 如此 。 中文 的 古典作品 ， 则 是 使用 另 一种 文雅 的 、 更 精简 的 表达方式 ， 十分 不同于 一般 的 口语 。 现代 的 中文 作家 ，通常 喜欢 在 自己 的 文章 内 加入 这样 的 一些 精致 语言 。 我 则 不 去 麻烦 自己 。 我 的 文章 简单 、直接 ，跟 口语 差不多 。 这种 写法 对 翻译 新闻 评论 或 完成 学校 布置 的 作业 ，已 绰绰有余 了 。 我 把 写 文章 当做 是 讲话 的 延伸 ，可以 帮助 我 增进 用 中文 表达 的 能力 。 学习 语言 的 人 应该 常常 写 文章 ，而且 也 应该 尽量 缩小 书面语言 与 口语 之间 的 差距 。

我 对 学习 生字 另 一个 坚持 的 原则 ，是 上下文 的 重要性 。 要 想 记住 中文 的 意义 ，词组 或 组合词 比 独自 出现 的 单字 容易 记得 多 。 我 至今 仍然 无法 辨认 某些 单独 出现 的 字 ， 而 对 词组 或 复合词 就 比较 容易 认出 它们 的 意思 。

这个 「 由 词组 、 或 更长 的 字句 前后 关系 来 学习 单词 」 的 原则 ，

对 学习 任何 语言 都 很 有 用处 ，

也 是 我们 开发 出来 的 语言 学习 系统 的 一个 主要 特点 。
